Abstract

This study entitled �¢����Analysis of Alienated Character in Nathaniel Hawthorne�¢����s Novel The Scarlet Letter: A Study of Psychoanalysis�¢����, which concerned with the character representation analysis on literary criticism. The aim of this study is to examine maturity process of self construction in child character in novel, which contains the estrangement of child in her being. In this case, the writer uses Psychoanalysis to approach the character interpretation. It indicates the alienation concept formed in child character. Besides, the writer can identify the cause of its alienation formation. One of psychoanalysis theories that the writer has chosen is Lacanian psychoanalysis theory. In this theory, the writer can analyze child character in the personal being identification. Additionally, the writer applies analytic descriptive method by Kutha Ratna (2007) for the description and analyses all elements of alienation in character�¢����s personal being. This method makes the writer easy to explore the alienation concept that happens in the character relating to Mirror Stage of Lacan's Psychoanalysis through Peter Barry's book (1824). Besides, the writer identifies the cause of each alienation concept that happens in the character. The findings of this study indicate that in Mirror Stage of child consists of Otherness that is emphasized by Self and Other, Imitate, and Eliminate element. In addition, the writer finds two concepts that exist in Pearl's personalities: Self alienation and Social alienation that are caused by the outsider, illusion, and social dissatisfaction aspects. All the data are analyzed by each Otherness category.
