Abstract

Freight movements on roads develop because of service to the demand for goods, and also to increase the value of goods. Freight movements can create problems such as traffic delay and congestion. These problems can be minimized by certain techniques in planning. One method is to predict the trip distribution of freight movements in the future by using existing trip distribution data. In this research several trip distribution models were applied to the West Java area, namely the gravity model, the intervening-opportunity model, the gravity-opportunity model and Furness. These models were estimated by using the Non-Linear-Least-Squares estimation method, based on observed trip distribution data (O-D data) for each pair of zones, to obtain parameter values for each model. With the parameter values the models produced trip distributions. The resulting trip distributions from each model were then compared to observed trip distributions. The O-D data was obtained from the National O-D survey report for 1996. The unit of data was total tonnes/year. From application of the models, the GO model with Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) as a destination attribute gave the best representation of freight movements in West Java. The parameter values for alpha was -0.0020 and Beta was 0.0323. The objective function value (S) was 179,722,500, which was 0.65 better when compared to the gravity model with Tanner's function. The GO model was a combination of the intervening factor and the impedance factor. In West Java, the weighting of the intervening factor was 0.2 (E equal 0.8).
