Abstract
Halmahera, with an area of 18.000 km2, is the largest island in North Maluku. Most of the island is still forested. These forests support 24 of 26 birds species endemic to North Maluku (see Appendix I). Halmahera also has other North Maluku endemic wildlife, including five mammals species, five frog species (of which four are known only from Halmahera) and five snake species including the famous Tropidonotus halmahericus which is endemic to Halmahera.
