Abstract

This paper describes the form of space in the mosque that comes into being due to ritual and non-ritual activities. Form of space is perceived as one of reading devices that may lead researcher to an understanding of the concept of existential meaning of the mosque. Space meaning is perceived differently by each individual. Meaning of a mosque in a contemporary context with the current generation will be the focus of study. The purpose is to get knowledge about the spatial pattern in Salman campus mosque which formed by the ritual and non-ritual. The expected finding is to be able to formulate a local concept of spatial pattern of Salman mosque. Salman mosque is chosen as the case study due to its historical role as a campus mosque on the establishment of the campus mosque in Indonesia. This mosque is quite phenomenal architecturally and has many congregations with diverse activities. Data collected through observation and depth interviews with a number of respondents. The results of spatial pattern understanding that occured is determined by: (1) user motivation, (2) time of arrival, (3) user: individual or group, (4) events. Through observation of spatial pattern and in-depth interviews, this study also produced a concept of tolerance among Salman mosque users.
