Abstract

A quick glance at map of poulation distribution in Indonesia will help to explain some of the original reasons for the program that has become known as "transmigration". The islands of Java,Madura,Bali, and Lombok referred to as "inner Indonesia" by Clifford Geertz, have rural populations densities that are among the highest in the world. In contrast are the islands of "outer Indonesia" like Sumatra,Kalimantan,Sulawesi,Maluku,Irian Jaya and Nusa Tenggara groups which are very sparsely populated.
