Abstract

A well made language test has given significant contributions in teaching learning experience without doubt. It may give not only some datas of the student’s potency but also the information about precise areas of difficulty encountered by the class or the learners by finding the weakness of student’s mastery in target language. Meanwhile, the qualified of English test has to fulfill some criterion including validity, reliability, and practically, so that, It can provide many advantage at teaching learning it self. In line with what has been stated above, this study attempts to know the level of validity and reliability of a teacher’s made midtest at vocabulary material of first semester students Muhammadiyah University of Malang. In this research, the writer takes population from all of the first semester students at Muhammadiyah University of Malang, where the number of them are 160 persons (class IA up to IE). Meanwhile, sample is taken randomly from class IA and ID (94 persons/students). Furthermore, the researcher collects objective data from learner’s answer sheet and uses content validity and internal consistency item reliability to observe the level validity and reliability. General result of this study is far from ideal theory of language test, because, this examination still lack in content validity and poor at reliability degree. Those statements are based on good content validity, whereas variety item test should represent course objectives. Unfortunately, some materials such kind of word in picture, antonym, synonym, and adverbial places are absent of teacher’s question sheet. In other side, reliability aspect does not get acceptable requirement (0.40 above). Because the result finding of reliability shows only at 0.37. Based on those fact, it reflects that validity and reliability teacher’s made midtest vocabulary of first semester students at Muhammadiyah University of Malang is still bellow at the level standard.
