Abstract

During the month of Ramadhan, healthy adult Muslim are obliged to fast from sunrise (Subuh) till sunset (maghrib). There are group of people who are exempted from fasting a.o. pregnant women and sick people. But many pregnant mothers are still doing fasting due to the strong believe that fasting during Ramadhan is one of the five pillars of Islam, during which God bless and forgives all sins of the fasting people. But it is not fully known wether the 30 days of Ramadhan fasting has effect to the pregnant mother particularly to the weight and development of the fetus. The objective of this study is trying to answer the question. Ten pregnant mothers who did fasting and ten other pregnant mothers who did not fasting during Ramadhan were taken by simple random sampling. The weight of the babies delivered by those two groups of pregnant mothers were compared. The result revealed that there was no significant different found in the baby weight at birth between the fasting and non fasting pregnant mothers.
