Abstract

Hypertension is a social health problem that mostly needs a life long treatment and if an appropriate management is not applied, it could trigger serious complication. Hypertension has a wide variety of risk factors. For this study we focus our attention to the role of obesity, family history, age and salt consumption as independent variables that possibly influence the onset of hypertension. A retrospective study was conducted where we took two groups of 130 patients each (one group is treated group, the other acts as control group). All samples were taken from the outpatient clinic of the UKI General Hospital. The age of the sample is 20 years and above. Prior to data analysis we determine rut off point of continuous data: age, obesity and salt consumption with AREA UNDER MAXIMAL ROC CURVE. The result shows that family history, obesity, age and salt consumption individually has ODDS RATIO (OR): 5.75, 2.45, 6.40 and 4.57 consecutively. Every rise of one BMI unit will increase 2.45 times of hypertension risk. It is recommended that everybody should keep their ideal weight, and if hypertension does occur, an appropriate therapy should be applied under strict continuous supervision of their family doctor.
