Abstract

Although the mechanism is still unclear, but the role of genetic factor in the etiology of epilepsy has been broadly agreed. A study on degree of kinship in the family pedigree and its relation to the inheritance pattern and its role in the etiology of grand mal epileptic patients has been carried out. For this purpose we took 22 out of 172 general epileptic patients who came for consultation in the Outpatient Clinic of Neurology Department, DR. Karyadi Hospital, Semarang. All selected patients have the same ailment in their family and their age and the age of onset are younger th an those with no sign of the disease in their family. The etiology proportion came out to be: 32.8% idiopathic, 13.6% symptomatic and 54.5% cryptogenic The youngest age among them are those with idiopathic. The age of onset can be regarded as a strong indicator of the existence of the general epileptic of idiopathic type. There was no symptomatic etiology among cases with inherited dominant autosomal pattern. It was also found that there was variability of inheritance in the family pedigree either in dominant autosomal or multi factorial pattern. A negative correlation was also detected between number of epileptic cases in the family and the degree of its kinship.
