Abstract

This is a study on the vector control of dengue hemorrhagic fever Aedes aegypti), malaria (Anopheles aconitus) and fila- riasis (Culex quinguefasciatus) using a local strain of Bacillusthuringiensis varietas israelensis which grown in local media (coconut water and soybean infusion). Tryptose Phosphate Broth chemical media (standard media) as a comparison was treated the same as an alternative media. Good growth B. thuringiensis varietas israelensis was obtained in all media (local media and standard media) and local strain of these bacteria were effective of killing three types of mosquito larvae. The local strain of Bacillus thuringiensis varietas israelensis after culturing in coconut water media, killed 50% of the third instar larvae of Ae. aegypti, An. aconitus and Cx. quinquefasciatus at a number of 13 x 10'5, 31 x 101' and 7 x 10-f for 24 hours of exposure respectively and 13 x 1W, 9 x 10-5 and 7 x 10" at 48 hours exposure. Meanwhile B. thurigiensis varietas israelensis cultured in soybean infusion media, killed 50% of the third instar larvae of Ae. aegypti, An. aconitus and Cx. quinquefasciatus at a number of 5 x 10", 7 x 10 -s and 4 x 10's for 24 hours of exposure respectively and 3 x 10-f, 5 x 10-5 and 3 x 10'5 at 48 hours exposure. However culturing in TPB media, killed 50'06 of the third instar larvae of Ae aegypti, An. aconitus and Cx quinquefasciatus at a number of 12 x 1W, 15 x 10" and 3 x 10-5 for 24 hours of expo sure respectively and 12 x 10-f, 15 x 10" and 2 x 10' at 48 hours exposure. This investigation shows that the local strain of B. thuringiensis varietas israelensis has potentiality to be used as a bioinsecticide.
