Abstract

A laboratory examination on ocular Chlamydia trachomatis infection was carried out in the Department of Microbiology, School of Medicine, University of Indonesia, Jakarta.Three staining methods were conducted simultaneously, namely the Giemsa staining, the iodine staining and the flourescent antibody technique applied each to a number of 207 slides, while another number of 207 specimens were employed for the isolation attempts of the etiologic agents.A number of 112 (54.11 %) out of a total number of 207 specimens showed positive Chlamydia trachomatis infections determined according to the three staining methods applied, which all results were considered to be contrary to expectation. The youngest patients studied had the ages of less than one year, while the oldest one had the age of 53 years. The largest number of chlamydial keratoconjunctivitis patients studied belonged to the of age group of 11 until 20 years totalling of 82 patients. Experimenting upon the sex distribution of all chlamydial keratoconjunctivitis patients studied it was clear that male patients with a number of 129 (62.32 %) were more prevalent than the female ones with a number of 78 (37.68%).Dealing with the yolk sac procedure to isolate Chlamydia trachomatis from ocular chlamydial patients it was obvious that a rather lower positive attempts were obtained with a number of only 102 (49.27%) out of a total number of 207 patients.
