Abstract

Mango (Mangifera Indica L.) is one of the commodities of tropical fruit which has a high and potential economic value, i.e. an export commodity. An application of in vitro culture of mango plant which aims at both micro propagation and improvement program for plant features in Indonesia is relatively still very low. Embryogenesis is one of the in vitro culture methods with the hope that it might bring improvement on the features of mango plant in the future. Recently, biotechnology field gives a great attention to embryo somatic since it might help genetic engineering get transgenic plant, either to keep germplasm or to get syntactic seeds. This study aims at investigating callus induction from cotyledon explant of ten manggo varietys . The explant used in this initial experiment is a cotyledon of young fruits mango within 30-40 days after flowering. The experiment was conducted from june to November 2001. at Tissue Culture Laboratory Center of Biotechnology Muhammadiyah University of Malang. The result of experiment showed there are different of callus induction from ten manggo varietys.Manalagi the best variety in callus induction and produces more compact callus.
