Abstract

This research is generally aimed at describing the role of the university leaders in developing women students' leadership on the basis of their need and interest and the university leaders' responsibility as well. In line with the purpose of research, the descriptive design was used in this project. The accessible population was woman student leaders in Muhammadiyah University of Malang. The sample was each woman student leader who had the highest structural position in each institutional unit in the university. The data collection was done by use of semistructure interview. The research finding shows that, firstly, the woman student leaders' need for developing their leadership potential can be categorized into two: physical and nonphysical. The former embraces the office building and other related facilities. The later, which is given priority, covers leadership trainning, university policies which facilitate the development of woman student leadership potential and the inclusion of the study of leadership in the academic curriculum. The next finding shows that there are, at least, two factors that motivate the woman student to join with an organization. The first is internal which constitutes the awareness and spirit to develop their organizational potential and self-confidence for more functional life. The second is external which constitutes the advices of the lecturers, parents and close friends and society's demand. The last finding shows that woman student leaders suggest the university leaders to: (1) provide facilities and freedom for the existance of woman student organization, (2) give assistance through institutional policies for developing leadership potential, (3) create campus environment which is condusive to leadership potential development, and (4) empower woman students' role in organization.
