Abstract

The large quantities of andesite stone in Pacitan Regency, East Java, has not been widely used for production of bituminous mixtures and should be exploited to the greatest extent possible. The objectives of the research programme in this thesis were to assess the engineering properties of an andesite aggregate from Pacitan and investigate the laboratory performance of asphalt concrete binder course containing andesite aggregate. A wide range of tests was conducted on the aggregate to evaluate characteristics relevant to its performance as a component of bituminous mixture. A mixture containing andesite aggregate was designed by the Marshall procedure and mixture at the optimum bitumen content was evaluated for resistance to water damage, indirect tensile strength and stiffness modulus and resistance to permanent deformation. For purposes of comparison, a parallel investigation was conducted using the widely used Banjaran and Cimalaka aggregates. The properties of andesite aggregate generally satisfy the requirements for aggregate acceptable for use in the production of bituminous mixtures, as indicated by such tests as Los Angeles abrasion, aggregate impact, aggregate crushing, ten % fines, flakiness, soundness and affinity for bitumen. However, specific garvity at 2.40 is somewhat lower than the minimum specified value of 2.50, and water absorption at 4.8 % is significantly higher than the maximum 3.0 % permitted. The performance of mixture containing andesite aggregate is satisfactory as indicated by the Marshall analysis, the Marshall immersion test, the wheel tracking test and the indirect tensile strength and stiffness modulus tests. The results show that the mix has the ability to resist disintegration, cracking and permanent deformation and compares favorably with mixture containing the Banjaran and Cimalaka aggregates.
