Angelheart and Maynard Rattu, Joy (2002) Blood coagulation variables in response to short tern exercise.
Full text not available from this repository.Abstract
Blood coagulation and fibrinolysis variables may contribute to atherosclerosis, and susceptibility to coronary heart disease is associated with perturbed physiological fibrinolytic activity. Physical inactivity is generally considered as an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and an increase in habitual physical activity is associated with a lower rate of ischemic heart disease. Numerous scientists have linked regular exercise to lower risk of coronary heart disease and cancer and increased longevity. Although the mechanisms by which exercise reduces cardiovascular risk are not as yet entirely known, it has been postulated that exercise may result in favorable changes in blood coagulation and fibrinolysis. This review outlines and evaluates the relevant literature on the effects of short term exercise on blood coagulation. Short-term exercise is usually associated with a significant shortening of activated partial thromboplastin time (A PTT) and a marked increase in factor VIII (FVIII). The rise in FVIII is directly related to exercise intensity. It is suggested that short term exercise activates blood coagulation.
