Abstract

Diseases related to infection of soil transmitted helminth such as, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hook worm are still a big problem of public health in Indonesia, particularly in rural areas. The purpose of this study is to know the correlation of helminth infection with nutritional status among the students of elementary school of Jonggrangan H, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta.Faeces were taken from all students and the examination was carried out by using direct and indirect methods. Kato's smear was used to count the eggs of helminth and to know the intensity of infection. Nutritional status was determined by adopting WHO-NCHS standard (1983), where height and weight of both sexes were measured. The result shows that the highest prevalence of infection is Trichuris trichiura (64%) which infected all groups of age and showed negative correlation with nutritional status. Secondly is hook worm. Forty seven percent of students were infected and the worm inclined to attack group 11 (more than 10 years old) and also show negative correlation with the nutritional status. The lowest prevalence was Ascaris lumbricoides (16%) and tend to attack group 1(7-9 years old), but also showed no correlation with nutritional status.
