The book is a result of study carried out by researchers from KONPHALINDO. It looks at the development of shrimp farming in Indonesia, with a specific focus on the impact of intensive shrimp cultivation on the north coast of Java. One of the planet’s most densely populated regions, it has also has a centu-ries-long tradition of aquaculture. It traces the long history of traditional aquaculture in the region and analyzes the transforma-tion towards more intensive monocultures of black tiger prawn (Pennaeus monodon) that accured in the 1980s. It then goes on to analyze the disastrous system out of sync with its surrounding environment and, indeed, its own ecological requirements. Finally, the book goes on to analyze the technical, ecological, and econo-mic adaptations that shrimp farmers made in the wake of the disaster. It concludes that the current system, which represents a combination of traditional and modern intensive systems, offers the best hope for sustainable and productive shrimp aquaculture in the region. But the authors go on to warn that the current economic crisis gripping Indonesia may lead to an ill-advised return to the high-yielding but ultimately unsustainable “boom-and-bust” practices of the 1980s. The book can contribute to a wiser policy course that learns from the mistakes of the past, rather than repeating them.
