Abstract

Stability problem due to inadequate strength of the subgrade soil often emerges when paved or unpaved roads are constructed on highly plastic clay soils or highly expansive clay soils. Generally, the bearing capacities of such soils are low, particularly after the soil swell. In soil stabilization work where the chemical agent used to modify the soils, the strength after swelling should be made as a major factor in determining the content of the stabilizing agent. This approach is entirely different with the common method of using only soil plasticity as the governing factor for determining the type and content of the stabilizing agent. The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship among swelling, density, and shearing behavior after saturation of highly plastic clay soil when compacted and stabilized with hydrated lime. Highly plastic clay samples with PI about 60% were mixed with 3%, 6%, 9%, 12%, and 15% hydrated lime. Five samples of each mixture were compacted and then soaked in odometer device. A series of surcharge pressure of 0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 kg/cm2 were applied on such samples. After saturation achieved, swelling, density, and unconfined compressive strength of the samples were determined. The results of the testing program show a linear relationship between density and logarithm of unconfined compressive strength. This relationship also varies with the increase of lime content. Base on the unconfined compressive strength after swelling, if a soil with PI of about 60% is used as lime-stabilized soil of road with heavy truck traffic, the appropriate lime content should be at least 12%
