Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) is a specially formulated surficing mix that improves durability, skid resistance, flexibility and rutting resistance. It is an open graded mix which can accomodate a high bitumen content. To take full advantage of the capacity of SMA to 'hold' bitumen it is necessary to include an additive whose function is to reinforce the bitumen. Arbocel is an additive that is widely used for this purpose and this thesis describes a laboratory investigation of SMA mixes made with 0 %, 0.2 %, 0.3 % and 0.5 % Arbocel, by weight of total mix. For purposes of comparison, an asphalt concrete surfacing mix (Laston) was also evaluated. The results of Softening Point and Penetration tests on bitumen stabilized with Arbocel showed that the Softening Point is significantly increased and the Penetration reduced with increase in Arbocel content. SMA mixes made with 0.2 % and 0.3 % Arbocel complied with Bina Marga Marshall design criteria; mixes with 0 % and 0.5 % Arbocel did not satisfy the criterion on Marshall quotient. The lower Marshall quotient values determined for the SMA mixes, as compared to the Laston mix, suggest that the SMA mixes have greater flexibility. The greater bitumen film thickness in these mixes should preserve this flexibility for a longer period.The better resistance of the SMA mixes to water damage is possibly also due to the greater bitumen film thickness. The Marshall stability of the Laston mixture is significantly greater than the values recorded for the SMA mixes, suggesting that the Laston mix has greater resistance to permanent deformation. However, wheel tracking test results show superior performance by the SMA mixes, in particular the mix with 0.3 % Arbocel. The indirect tensile resilient modulus of SMA with 0.3 % Arbocel is higher than that of Laston over a range in temperature and is marginally less temperature susceptible. Overall the SMA mix with 0.3 % Arbocel gave a superior performance than the mix with 0.2 % Arbocel; when compared to the Laston, the SMA mix with 0.3 % Arbocel is generally superior with the exception of Marshall stability.
